Harambee Starlets sweep aside South Sudan to stay perfect at CECAFA

Harambee Starlets cruised to a 4-0 victory over South Sudan on Wednesday evening, maintaining their perfect record at the CECAFA Women’s Championship and moving top of the group with nine points.

Harambee Starlets made it three wins from three at the CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, by dispatching South Sudan 4-0 at the Azam Sports Complex on Wednesday evening.

The Starlets got off to a dream start, opening the scoring in just the second minute when Faith Mboya pounced on a poor clearance inside the box and unleashed a thunderous strike into the net.

The early breakthrough set the tone for Kenya’s dominance, although the tempo soon slowed. Despite controlling possession and carving out several chances, the Starlets were wasteful in front of goal, missing opportunities that could have stretched the lead further.

Still, the Kenyan side remained firmly in control. A minute into the second half, Violet Wanyonyi doubled the advantage with a low strike from outside the box.

The third came in the 65th minute when Martha Amunyolet finished off a short corner routine to score her fourth goal of the tournament.

Deep into stoppage time, Amunyolet delivered a teasing corner that the South Sudan goalkeeper failed to deal with, allowing Elizabeth Ochaka to head home unmarked and seal a commanding 4-0 win.

With the result, Kenya now tops the group with nine points and a goal difference of +11, having scored 11 goals and conceded none.

Tanzania, currently second with six points and a goal difference of +10, are set to face Uganda later this evening at 7:00 PM at the same venue. To overtake Kenya and finish top of the group, they must win by at least two goals without conceding.

The Starlets will meet Tanzania on Saturday at the Azam Sports Complex in what promises to be a high-stakes final group match.

With the tournament being played in a round-robin format, every goal could prove decisive in determining who finishes top and ultimately lifts the CECAFA title.
